Fountain Gardens

Centered just east of the Visitor’s Center, the Fountain Garden is one of the most popular areas. With its large, dramatic center fountain and the total shade cover provided by mature honey locust trees, it is a most serene location to sit and relax. Many benches in the area encourage you to do just that. The area is encircled by shrubs and perennial plants which gives it a lush and sheltered atmosphere. Large containers and hanging baskets overflow with shade-loving annuals. The informal perennial beds which form the outer “walls” of this garden, include plantings of Meadow Rue (Thalictrum rochebrunianum), Plume Poppy  (Macleaya cordata), and Ligularia “The Rocket” (Ligularia senecio).  Also, while visiting the Fountain Garden, look for the plantings of Oakleaf Hydrangea  (Hydrangea quercifolia) with their white flowers and exfoliating bark.
