| The Dryland Garden, originally built in the early 1970’s, was restored with improved cultivars in 2001. Franz Lipp designed this garden to represent a desert, or arid environment. Using rocky, sand based soil, he selected plant material typical of this country’s arid coastal areas and dry, high sierras. The Dryland Garden demonstrates plant life found in these rugged areas. In the center of this landscaped garden, you’ll find trees and shrubs that include Colorado Blue Spruce (Picea pungens), Cutleaf Sumac (Rhus typhina), Kalm St. Johnswort (Hypericum kalmianum ), Five-stamen Tamarix (Tamarix ramosissima) along with many varieties of Junipers. Along the lower portions of the Dryland Garden a wide variety of perennial Sedums can be found, along side other types of drought tolerant perennials including Artemisia Silver Brocade (Artemisia stelleriana), Russian Sage (Perovskia atriplicifolia), Yarrow (Achillea filipendulina) and Sea Pink (Armeria maritime). The Dryland Garden is located on the far southeast side of the gardens near the Douglas Fir Garden and the Rock Garden. |
